Across the Małopolska region, numerous shelters and asylum care for hundreds of homeless animals every day. Their operation depends largely on donations and the support of kind-hearted people, while maintenance costs continue to rise. Providing food on a regular basis is a fundamental need — it ensures that the animals can live with dignity and have a chance to recover. Every contribution matters. They help these facilities care for the health and well-being of their animal residents. Our fundraiser aims to provide them with the necessary resources to effectively assist animals in need. An important aspect is also raising public awareness about the situation of homeless animals and the role each of us can play in supporting them. We want more people to get involved in helping shelters, promoting adoption, and encouraging responsible pet care. Funds raised through this project will be used to purchase pet food and support informational and promotional activities. We believe that through our joint efforts, we can truly improve the lives of many animals. Every contribution, no matter how small, helps build a better world for four-legged friends in Małopolska.
According to a global study from 2024, there are approximately 950,000 homeless dogs and cats in Poland, which accounts for about 8% of the domestic animal population. Of this number, around 125,000 animals reside in shelters, while the rest live without care. Although precise data for the Małopolska region is lacking, the number of homeless animals there can be estimated based on nationwide statistics. Assuming Małopolska represents a proportional share of the country's population, it is estimated that around 76,000 homeless animals live in this region, including approximately 45,000 dogs and 31,000 cats. It is roughly estimated that Małopolska shelters and rescue centers house about 5,900 dogs and 4,100 cats. However, it is important to remember that these are estimates, and the actual number of homeless animals may vary.
The estimated demand for food for homeless animals in Poland is enormous. Assuming an average weight of 5 kg for a cat and 15 kg for a dog, approximately 450 g of dry food or 1.5 kg of wet food is needed daily for a dog, and 100 g of dry or 500 g of wet food for a cat. For 76,000 homeless animals (45,000 dogs and 31,000 cats), this means daily:
- Dry food: approximately 22.5 tons for dogs and 3.1 tons for cats.
- Wet food: approximately 67.5 tons for dogs and 15.5 tons for cats.
In Małopolska alone, where shelters house 5,900 dogs and 4,100 cats, the daily demand is:
- Dry food: approximately 2,66 tons for dogs and 410 kg for cats.
- Wet food: approximately 8.85 tons for dogs and 2.05 tons for cats (a total of about 10.9 tons).
Assuming a price of 6 PLN per kilogram of dry food and 15 PLN per kilogram of wet food, the daily expenses are significant. For 76,000 homeless animals, including 45,000 dogs and 31,000 cats, the cost of dry food amounts to approximately 153,000 PLN per day, while wet food costs as much as 1.25 million PLN per day. On a monthly scale, this translates to about 4.6 million PLN for dry food and 37.5 million PLN for wet food. In Małopolska alone, where shelters and rescue centers house 5,900 dogs and 4,100 cats, the daily costs for dry food are around 18,400 PLN, and for wet food approximately 163,500 PLN. Monthly, these figures are about 552,000 PLN and 4.9 million PLN, respectively. Caring for the animals involves enormous expenses, which is why every bit of support for shelters is incredibly valuable. The daily cost of feeding a dog is about 25.20 PLN, which amounts to 756 PLN per month. The daily cost of feeding a cat is around 8.10 PLN, resulting in 243 PLN per month.
